I haven’t had a chance to do any plein air painting in over a couple months. But today, I finally had a chance to pack up my EasyL Pro and my paints and head to Lloyd Stage Nature Center in Troy , MI. The weather was perfect. It was in the low 30s, but not windy or bitter. There was fresh snow all over the ground. And the sun was out, which meant I could paint the sun and shadows on the snow.

I hiked a bit throughout the trails and settled on a hilly area with a couple bird houses. I chose one of the bird houses for the subject and walked as far back as I could and still see it. I liked how it contrasted with the dark background. I also liked the angle that the shadows of some trees made on the snow.

Here’s the painting I did in a couple hours. I call it The Winter Condo. It’s an 11″ x 14″ oil on panel painted completely with a painting knife. I used a limited palette of Utrecht White, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Cadmium Yellow Pale, Alizarin Crimson, and Burnt Sienna.
